HEMPSTEAD, NY — Members of the Hempstead Classroom Teachers Association (HCTA) held a rally Monday afternoon outside the school administration offices. The demonstrators were asking for a new "fair contract."
The Association's flyer for the rally stated that members "faithfully served the students and families in Hempstead Public Schools. Yet, we have not had a raise in 11 years and our contract expired in 2013."
Hempstead School District receives $113 million in state aid, and $26 million in federal aid, according to the HCTA. Hempstead was also awarded $19 million in emergency federal relief for the 2020-2021 school year. The emergency federal relief cannot be earmarked for teacher salaries.
The median teacher's salary in Hempstead is $93,534, according to seethroughny.net, a government transparency website.
For comparison, nearby districts median salaries clock in at: $131,137, Hewlett-Woodmere; $119,689, Garden City; $124,777, Merrick; $120,475, Bellmore.
