Teen Arrested With Knife At Toms River School: Police

TOMS RIVER, NJ — A teenager was arrested last week after he brought a knife to school, one of two incidents that led to a police response at the Toms River schools, Toms River police said. There was no threat to students or staff in either incident, both of which happened on April 28, said Jillian Messina, media relations specialist for the Toms River Police Department. The 13-year-old was arrested after bringing the knife to Toms River Intermediate East, and was charged and released with a summons to a guardian. Messina said no additional information would be released because the student is a minor. The second incident happened the same day at Walnut Street Elementary School, Messina said. Police received a report of a "disorderly person" who was using the school property as a shortcut on their way home. Staff members told police they were concerned about the person's demeanor, she said. Officers were able to talk with the person and learned the person was suffering from a mental illness, Messina said. The person was told they could not trespass on school property, she said. No students or staff at Walnut Street School were endangered by the person, Messina said.
