Press release from the City of Iowa City: May 4, 2021 The City of Iowa City recently awarded a total of $60,000 in Community Climate Action Grants to seven community organizations for community-led climate action initiatives. The Community Climate Action Grant program encourages Iowa City businesses, organizations, and students to lead fellow community members in supporting and adopting strategies that promote energy efficiency, reduce reliance on single-occupant vehicles, and enhance quality of life for all. The seven grants awarded in the 2021 funding round directly support increased energy efficiency in residential and commercial buildings and will showcase renewable energy options while reducing energy costs for the demonstration sites. Grants will also educate and engage with the community on extreme weather resilience and preparation in order to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change. Organizations and businesses were eligible for grants up to $10,000. A total of $60,000 is reserved for this program and funds will be available beginning July 1, 2021. In 2018, the City adopted a Climate Action and Adaptation Plan to address fundamental initiatives in reaching the City's goals to reduce carbon emissions by 45% (based on 2010 levels) by 2030, and approach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The application period for K-12 student grants of $500 remains open through Friday, May 7.
