TORRANCE, CA — Drivers in the South Bay were urged to celebrate Cinco de Mayo responsibly during small gatherings or virtual hangouts Wednesday night, and by having a sober driver, Torrance police said.
The Torrance Police Department plans to have additional officers on patrol from 4 p.m. to midnight who are looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, officials said.
"Don't ruin the celebrations by putting yourself and others at risk and driving impaired," Sgt. David Koenig said. "If you're planning on drinking, plan on getting a sober ride home."
The Torrance Police Department also reminds the public that in addition to alcohol, drugs may also impair driving, including marijuana.
People are advised to check their medications and avoid driving if there is a "do not operate heavy machinery," "may cause drowsiness" or other warning labels.
The funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
