ELMHURST, IL — Glos Memorial Park, which is in downtown Elmhurst, is set for improvements. According to a news release, the Elmhurst Park District is seeking input on what the public would like to see at the park. The park is at 142 E. Park Ave. and the expansion area is at 135 Robert Palmer Drive. Glos has provided open space and formal gardens in downtown Elmhurst, the city's most densely populated area, since the 1970s, the news release said. In 2017, the district acquired 135 Robert Palmer Drive, a building next to the park. This year, the goal is to demolish the building and parking lot by the end of the summer and return the area to open space for the community, the district said. The original park land was donated to the city in the 1940s, but was not developed into a park until 1979 and dedicated in 1981, according to the district's website. The city began leasing the land to the district in 1978. That year, some land was lost when an underpass was installed, the district said. The land was donated by Lucy Glos, wife of banker Henry Glos. The property is the site of the Glos mausoleum. The Tree Towns Garden Guild cares for the rose garden, the district said. The district is asking residents to take a survey about the park.
