Description
Dear Community,
Do you have an extra room in your home? Would you like to welcome an individual with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) into your life?
I recruit California MENTOR Network host home Mentors throughout San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura Counties. My passion is to match up community members who have an extra room in their homes (and some time and also love in their hearts) with individuals with IDD.
We call host home community members Mentors, and they not only provide a home for individuals with IDD, but they also provide guidance, support, and coaching. I love matching up Mentors with individuals and watching their friendships grow - some even describe their relationships as family.
Yes, Mentors get a stipend, but the benefits they receive far outweigh any monetary reimbursement.
The process of becoming a Mentor is rigorous - like becoming a foster care parent - but the rewards are huge. You'll go through a background check, medical exam, reference checks, and more. Even your dog needs to be licensed and vaccinated for you to be a Mentor. (It's OK if you don't have a dog.) :)
