Description

Send a clear message that LGBTQ+ students, families, and educators deserve to be represented in Utah Schools LGBTQ+ students, families, and educators deserve to be represented in Utah schools. The purpose of this rally is to show support for the active inclusion of LGBTQ+ identities in Utah schools. With this rally and public show of support, Utah FAM aims to make the road better for Utah’s LGBTQ+ youth. The rally will feature an art build, a reading from “Call Me Max” author Kyle Lukoff, and personal stories shared by Utah LGBTQ teachers, student leaders, and allies. Utah FAM believes that Utah is entering a new era where LGTBQ+ people and their stories can and should be included and celebrated in schools. Utah’s LGBTQ+ youth and K-12 educators need and deserve representation in Utah schools and in books and in the curriculum. Teaching respect for LGBTQ+ people and including their stories in Utah classrooms is a crucial educational component for all Utahns. Affirmative LGBTQ+ role models and inclusive curriculum empower LGBTQ+ youth to build self-esteem and form healthy identities. The May 18th rally is a chance to send a signal to Utah state legislators, school boards, and administrators, showing that we value diversity, inclusion, and want basic human respect taught in our schools. This rally is a public opportunity for LGBTQ+ allies across the state to stand up to misinformation, prejudice, and outdated stigmas perpetuated by Utah’s vociferous anti-LGBTQ community. The rally at the Utah State Capitol is also an opportunity to come together as a community to embrace courageous LGBTQ+ students and educators and to show our love and support. To build momentum, we encourage allies to share rally information on social media, using the hashtag #mystorybelongs to document our K-12 stories and our support for LGBTQ+ inclusion in our schools.
