Moss Park Trail Hike
Come join fellow Stewards and their families for a nature hike through Harry S. Moss Park. Over the past few years, Harry S. Moss Park has undergone a native prairie restoration, attempting to bring it back to its original Blackland Prairie glory. Due to its fertile soil, most Blackland Prairie is now used for agriculture with less than 1% still in its native form. Through the years of various land-use practices, and with some help along the way years ago, the species typically found in a prairie area have persisted in Moss Park. In being good stewards to the land and in keeping with the spirit of the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge, the Dallas Park and Recreation Department has taken steps to more actively manage this area as a prairie. Moss Park contains many miles of trails through an incredible mixture of prairie remnant, bottomland hardwood, and even some wetlands if you find the right trail!
One of the most helpful tools in managing the prairie restoration is the iNaturalist app. This citizen science app allows everyday people to log plants, animals, and bugs. It is an incredible tool to help learn more about the natural world around us, and to help conservationists follow population trends and species of interest. A brief tutorial on the app will be given during coffee and donut time.

This hike also occurs during peak bird migration. Last year, over 100 species of birds were found in Moss park in May alone. If you are interested in a more focused birding outing, please select that option to be paired with experienced birders.
