SOMERVILLE, MA — Lt. John "Moose" Byrne wrapped up his final shift Monday after nearly 35 years of service to the Somerville Fire Department. In a statement on Facebook, the department wrote that Byrne served as a firefighter on Engine 3 in Union Square before spending the majority of his career as a lieutenant on Engine 2. Byrne was known for his dedicated service, showing up an hour early for his shift for more than three decades. "Numerous firefighters were assigned to John right out of the academy for him to train on how to do this job; many of which went on to become officers themselves," the department said. "His knowledge and leadership will be missed around the fire stations."
