NEW YORK CITY — A nearly pandemic-long spike in shootings across New York City continued last week, according to the latest NYPD crime statistics. Shooting incidents were up 200 percent last week compared to the same span in 2020, data shows. There were 42 total incidents compared to 14 during the week last year, according to data. Likewise, there were 49 victims of shootings last week compared to 17 in 2020, the data shows. Mayor Bill de Blasio, when asked about recent shootings last week, again returned to his refrain of a "perfect storm" from the coronavirus disrupting New York City. "It's just not realistic to say, you know, that happened and it didn't have an impact," he said. "That had a profoundly negative impact and a huge number of police officers were out sick. There are so many aberrant realities. This year we have so much coming back to the other way." The spike in shootings last week is likely more dramatic because it corresponds to a week when New York City was in the depths of lockdown. Crime numbers overall saw jumps this week compared to 2020 weeks. Murders were up about 267 percent, the data shows. Recent high-profile reports of anti-Asian hate crimes was reflected in a 400 percent jump in hate crimes overall, according to the data. But overall most crimes remain roughly flat year-over-year, the data shows. Significant exceptions are murders, hate crimes and shootings, which are at least 50 percent higher than five years ago, according to data. CompStat 05-02-2021 by Matt Troutman on Scribd
