Among Minuteman Senior Projects, Town Students Shine

Your Arlington Last Updated: 03 May 2021 Written by Dan O'Brien Every spring, Minuteman High School seniors present impressive senior projects, demonstrating a culmination of skills learned in their career technical areas over the past four years. Here is a sample shared recently on social media that shows projects by Arlington students. Ellie Vail: Mechanical Globe Watch a short video clip on Instagram Ellie Vail, an advanced-manufacturing student from Arlington, created this mechanical globe using a computer numeric control (CNC) milling machine and a 3D printer with a crank that allows it to rotate. Ellie noted that the size of the countries on the globe reflect a more accurate depiction of than those on most traditional maps and globes, which use the Mercator Projection and depict Africa and South America as much smaller than their actual size; some academics now use the Peters Projection Map and other sources. Ellie will attend the University of Utah this fall to study mechanical engineering. At Minuteman, she's participated in SkillUSA, Girls in Trades, Girls in STEM, the Math Team, Peer Leadership, and played on the cross country and basketball teams. Hydraulic arm and more Watch short video clips on Instagram In the robotics career major, Marley Fortune of Arlington designed a hydraulic arm using computer-aided design and acrylic plastic. Syringes containing water pressure move the arm when squeezed. On a larger scale, the arm would be used in assembly of heavy objects. Marley has been accepted to Worcester Poly Tech, R.I. School of Technology, and UMass Amherst. Stefan Phillips of Arlington designed a conveyor belt and stacking machine using mechatronics; Gabriel Herbertz of Stow designed a drone; and Peter Loschen of Winchester designed a computer processor called a four-bit CPU.
