Randall's Island Unveils 2 New Sculptures By Famed Artist

HARLEM, NY — Two new works of public art by a prominent sculptor were unveiled this week on Randall's Island, set to remain on view to the public into next year. The sculptures by the artist Rubem Robierb include a new work: "Peace Makers," a 10-foot work inspired by recent protests for racial justice. The painted stainless steel sculpture is now on view by the 103rd Street Footbridge at Randall's Island Park, where it will remain until May 2022. The sculpture's pedestal includes inscriptions by CNN anchor Don Lemon and Whoopi Goldberg, who wrote: "This is the Movement of Peace, the ridges of peace, the highs and lows of Peace, this is the unbreakable beauty of Peace…and Rubem has captured it all in the Peace Makers." (Courtesy of the Randall's Island Park Alliance) Meanwhile, the park also unveiled "Dream Machine II," an existing butterfly-shaped work of Robierb's that has been installed on the park's north side, near the Bronx Shore Picnic Area. It will also remain until May 2022. Robierb, who is based in New York City and Miami, is known as a pop artist. His prominent works include "Dandara," a sculpture honoring New York's transgender community that was installed in Tribeca Park in 2019.
