Loaded Gun, Drugs Found In Man's Car: Greenwich Police

GREENWICH, CT — Police said two men were arrested on April 30 after a traffic stop led to the discovery of a loaded gun and narcotics. Last Friday, shortly before 3 a.m., according to police reports, Greenwich officers observed a black Jeep Compass with a rear plate marker light out driving suspiciously through several Riverside and Old Greenwich neighborhoods. Police noted the area had previously been targeted by criminals for stolen vehicles and vehicle break-ins. Officers said they conducted a motor vehicle stop on Arch Street and immediately detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the car. The driver, Anthony Belmont, 25, of Stamford, was observed to have "glassy, red eyes," and he admitted to smoking marijuana prior to operating the car, said the police report. According to the report, when Belmont was instructed to exit the vehicle, he "secretly attempted to discard a small, glassine baggie onto the ground that contained two small round blue pills," later identified as Clonazapam, a controlled substance for which he did not have a prescription for. A search of Belmont's car for additional narcotics yielded a metallic spice grinder containing less than a half ounce of suspected marijuana, as well as a fully loaded, 12-round 9mm handgun magazine, according to the report. Police said that Belmont admitted to being in possession of a loaded handgun under his driver seat, which was later found to be a 9 mm Ruger handgun with a fully loaded, 10-round magazine. A large glass smoking pipe that contained suspected marijuana residue in the back seat was found as well. According to the police report, Belmont admitted to ownership of both items, and a subsequent firearms records check indicated that Belmont does not possess a valid CT pistol permit. Belmont was placed under arrest and transported to GPD Headquarters where officers conducted standardized field sobriety tests. Police said Belmont refused to submit to chemical testing. Belmont was charged with weapons in a motor vehicle; possession of a large capacity magazine; possession of a controlled substance; possession of drug paraphernalia; possession of less than a half ounce of marijuana; operating under the influence; and failure to have two working marker lamps. Belmont was unable to post his $25,000 bond, and was being held at GPD Headquarters. The passenger in the car, identified as Fabio Volcimus, 20, also from Stamford, was found to have a small quantity of a waxy substance that later tested positive for THC, police said. He was also in possession of a metallic smoking pipe and a spice grinder. Volcimus, who could not produce positive identification, was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of less than a half ounce of marijuana. He was unable to post his $500 bond, and was held at GPD Headquarters. Both men have a court appearance date of May, 28, 2021 at Stamford Superior Court.
