Learn and practice kayak rescue techniques .
Michigan's lakes are a huge draw for both tourists and locals. However, the great lakes can also be finicky and perilous to an unprepared kayaker. This course covers the basics of safety equipment as well as getting back into your kayak when bad things happen.
Topics covered:
Safety equipment - communication, exposure, contingenciesAssisted Rescues: T-Rescue, bow rescueSelf Rescues: Scrambling, Paddle floatsWe'll demonstrate the rescues and encourage the participants to try it themselves. Some advanced techniques (re-enter and roll, hand-of-god) may also be demonstrated.
Bring:
Kayak with bulkheads or flotation and deck lines We MAY be able to accommodate some recreation style kayaks but these are considerably more difficult to recover with and aren't intended to be used far from shore or in conditions. Contact the instructor first if you're not sure about your kayak.Dress for COLD. Stoney Lake is shallow and warms up early, but this is May in Michigan. Dry suits or wetsuits are recommended. Cotton clothing is a non-starter.Paddle, Paddle Float, Type III PFD, Bilge pump, sprayskirtChange of clothes and Towel in the carCOVID Statement: Assisted rescues require the participants to face each other closer than 6' during a strenuous activity. We encourage participants to come with a buddy that they are comfortable with. Unpaired participants may pair with another kayaker or just observe these exercises. Masks are to be worn on shore when we are grouped together. If you show any symptoms, stay home.
