TRAVIS COUNTY, TX — An inmate at the Travis County Correctional Complex died in custody Friday, officials with the Travis County Sheriff's Office reported Monday. Nicholas Vanwyhe, 39, of Austin was found unresponsive in his cell Friday night after a corrections officer conducting visual checks spotted him, authorities said. Austin-Travis County EMS and Travis County Sheriff's Office medical staff attempted CPR on Vanwyhe; however, he was later pronounced dead at 11:01 p.m. Authorities said Vanwyhe had been in custody since April 15 and was charged with stalking, a third degree felony in the state of Texas. The Travis County Sheriff's Office's Internal Affairs Unit, Criminal Investigations Division, the Texas Rangers and the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an investigation as to what may have lead to Vanwyhe's in-custody death. An autopsy was conducted Sunday and a final report is pending toxicology results, officials said.
