AUSTIN, TX — An 18-year-old man was arrested in connection to a Thursday night shooting at the Goodnight Commons Apartments in South Austin. Jeremiah Crayton was arrested Friday and faces murder charges in the death of Eshmell Arath Mendez. His bond has been set at $250,000. On Thursday, 911 received a call reporting someone had been shot at the apartment complex on the 2000 block of East Slaughter Lane. When officers arrived, they found Mendez lying on the floor of an apartment, authorities said. Austin-Travis County EMS attempted life-saving measures on Mendez; however, he was later pronounced dead on scene. An autopsy performed by the Travis County Medical Examiner confirmed Mendez' death to be a homicide by gunshot. Officials said a preliminary investigation indicates that Mendez was inside the apartment visiting friends when Crayton knocked at the door. One of the residents opened the door when Crayton pulled a pistol from his jacket pocket and shot Mendez. Crayton fled the scene in a silver, four-door sedan, officials said. An arrest warrant was issued Friday and Crayton was taken into custody by the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force the same day without incident.
