NAPERVILLE, IL — Naperville Police Department officials are crediting the work of officers for bringing a tense situation to a non-violent ending after authorities received reports of a man standing on a bridge on Route 59 looking down at I-88 on Monday night, officials said Tuesday.
Officers encountered the man about 8:15 p.m. Monday to do a wellness check on the man, who then pulled a knife and told an officers to keep his distance, police said. Officers from the department spent the next hour attempting to help the man by talking to him.
Both Route 59 and I-88 were closed for the entire time, police said.
After an hour, police said that the man – who has not been identified – attempted to run away from officers but was caught by officers.
"We're extremely proud of our officers' use of their de-escalation, mental health and tactical training to bring this very tense and dangerous situation to a non-violent resolution so that this young man can hopefully get the help he needs," officials said in a news release.
