AURORA—There were no major injuries reported Monday afternoon after an Aurora School District 129 school bus was rear-ended while dropping off children from school.
The students from Smith Elementary School were headed home on bus route 22 when the crash occurred near the intersection of Indian Trail and Golden Oaks Parkway at 2:29 p.m..
The District 129 transportation department said that an SUV struck the school bus from behind, causing the SUV to ignite. District officials said the bus was distanced away from the SUV when the minor fire occurred.
According to Aurora Police Department spokesman Paris Lewbel, no children were transported to the hospital. The driver of the SUV was transported by paramedics, but a condition is unknown.
District and building administrators visited the scene to support students as they were each checked on by paramedics before being taken home or picked up.
The roadway was shut down until around 3:45 p.m. as investigators worked the scene. No tickets have been issued. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
