The First Day 5K is established to raise funds to purchase new shoes for deserving kids in Gahanna to have for the first day of school. Kyle was our son, our brother, and our friend. He had a huge heart and an even bigger sense of humor. From day one in his battle with cancer, he never gave up. Always with a smile on his face, Kyle was more interested in how you were doing rather than tell you about himself. His spirit of generosity still lives within all of those he touched. One of Kyle's favorite things was getting new shoes. Kyle loved his new kicks for the first day of school each year and posed with his friends in what became our annual first-day photo. It's that same excitement that we would like to try and bring to some of our Gahanna school children this summer. We've started the First Day 5K to raise funds to purchase new shoes for kids in Gahanna to have in time for the first day of school. Our 3rd Annual Kyle Miller First Day 5K will begin at Creekside Park & Plaza at 151 Mill St. in Gahanna on Sunday, August 8th. Check-in/registration will open at 8:00 AM and the race will begin at 9:20 AM. We'll also have a Kids Fun Run (9:00 AM) prior to the race so be sure to register! With the money raised, we will purchase gift cards through DSW. With the help of Gahanna Residents In Need (GRIN) we will identify families to receive the gift cards. *** This is not a timed run. Where to park? The Creekside area in Gahanna has plenty of parking options from free public lots to street parking. However, your best bet in terms of immediate proximity is probably going to be the parking garage which is directly next to where we will be set up for the race. It’s located on Mill Street at the intersection of Walnut Street. If you put “151 Mill St. Gahanna 43230” into your Google machine, you’ll find it. When should I arrive? The earlier the better. Registration will open at 8 AM with our 5K beginning at 9:20 AM. We’ll need you to check-in and fill out a very quick form that contains our waiver/release. This is our first in-person 5K in about two years because of the pandemic and we might have forgotten how to do this so, you know, if you can come early and get the form out of the way, we would appreciate it. We think we’ve thought of everything but…you know how that goes. When will the kids fun run begin? We’re hoping to start the kids fun run at 9:00 AM. It won’t take very long at all and should be done in about 5-7 minutes. I missed out on pre-ordering a t-shirt. Will I be able to snag one that morning? Possibly…but maybe not. We did order a few extras. Guess you’ll have to roll those dice and get here early! Since this is a run/walk, how will the runners/walkers be lined up? Listen for our emcee to make the announcement when the time comes. If you’ve been to Ohio Stadium to watch the Buckeyes play, you’ve probably heard our emcee, Bob Kennedy. Bob is the PA announcer for Buckeye football games. Kyle was a huge Buckeyes fan so naturally we had to ask Bob to help us out! He's been with us since year one! Bob will instruct our faster runners to begin to line up first. Then we’ll ask those that may be doing a combination of running/walking to fall in behind. Those who plan to walk the entire way will be asked to bring up the rear. Most of you have done this before. You know how it goes. What’s the restroom situation? No port-a-potties here, pal! We’ve got high-class permanent ones! You’ll find sufficient restroom facilities on the lower level of the plaza near where we are beginning the race. Overall, it’s going to be a great morning! Come early and say hi! Stretch those legs. Pay attention to the signage and course marshals during the race. There will be a water station at the turn. Ummm...I think that’s pretty much it.
