MELROSE, MA — The city recently saw its 2,000th coronavirus case since the beginning of the pandemic, a reminder of the toll the virus has taken on the community despite a recent downturn in activity.
Thursday's Department of Public Health report counted 53 cases from April 11-24. At some point in that time, the 2,000th case was confirmed. Melrose has now seen at least 2,048 cases, meaning roughly 7 percent of residents have tested positive.
Still, metrics continue to improve. The two-week positivity rate has dipped to 1.55 percent, while the two-week average daily incidence rate per 100,000 is at 13.1.
A big reason for the decrease in cases is the increase in vaccinations. A separate report last week said 61 percent of residents have been at least partially vaccinated and 41 percent fully vaccinated — numbers that are even higher when you look at just the adult population.
