BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Le Vent du Nord, a quintet that celebrates the French musical heritage of Québec, Canada, will join Baltimore County Public Schools students May 11 at 9:35 a.m. on Zoom. The event will be open to everyone. Le Vent du Nord, which means "the wind from the north," will be speaking from Québec as part of the World Culture in Context program that connects students with renowned artists from around the globe performing in the places that have impacted their work. There will be virtual, live conversations about creativity, belonging and culture. The series was launched in November 2020 by the BCPS Office of Social Studies and BCPS Office of Career and Technical Education and Fine Arts and the Baltimore-based Creative Alliance. The French musical heritage of Québec is known for its bouncing, rhythmic fiddle style, unique tunes and spirited step dancing. Le Vent du Nord, a quintet of talented players who grew up immersed in the tradition, is regarded as the best traditional Québécois band in the world. Previous World Culture in Context performances featured dancer/choreographer/cultural ambassador Melaku Belay, broadcasting from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; the gospel group The Legendary Ingramettes, broadcasting from Virginia; celebrated percussionist Kim So Ra, broadcasting from Seoul, South Korea; renowned bluesman Jontavious Willis, broadcasting from Georgia; and master throat singer Bady-Dorzhu Ondar, broadcasting from Siberia, Russia.
