Man Shot While Playing Basketball At Park In Hamden: Police

HAMDEN, CT — A New Haven man was shot while playing basketball at Villano Park in Hamden on Saturday night, according to police. Police responded to Villano Park, 260 Mill Rock Rd., around 9:20 p.m. on the report of shots fired, according to Capt. Ronald Smith. Police found that a 21-year-old New Haven resident was shot and was being treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital after he was taken there by a friend, according to Smith. Smith said the victim was playing basketball when he heard a single gunshot and "immediately started bleeding from his head." His injuries were described as "non-life threatening," according to Smith. "Villano Park was 'filled with people playing and onlookers,'" Smith wrote in a news release. "After hearing the gunshot, the park 'emptied out, with people running and fleeing in fear for their lives.'" Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Jomo Crawford at 203-230-4048.
