NEWPORT, RI — Rhode Island's gas prices have resumed their weekly climb, rising three cents, on average, over the past week. This week's average price was $2.83 per gallon. The current price is nearly $1 higher than the average price this time last year, $1.92. It's also 6 cents higher than the average price this time last year. Lloyd Albert, a spokesperson for AAA Northeast, said that after some relief in April, driver should expect gas prices to climb in May. "We're likely to see much larger increases as demand for gasoline begins to increase, especially as Memorial Day and the busy summer travel season approaches," Albert said. ""Both demand and supply have steadily increased over the last several weeks." Rhode Island's average price is currently 7 cents cheaper than the national average of $2.88, which rose 2 cents over the past week. Massachusetts' current average price is 3 cents lower at $2.80, while Connecticut is considerably higher at $2.94.
