Press release from the City of Iowa City: April 30, 2021 The City's Office of Equity and Human Rights will be hosting an online training addressing the issues of privilege at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 6, 2021. This interactive, informational, and challenging session will examine and explore issues related to power, privilege and leadership. It's imperative that those promoting equity and diversity "get in on the conversations" about systemic change and progress. Participants will leave the session with the skills and knowledge necessary to begin addressing issues of privilege, power and leadership comprehensively. This is a follow up to the #RealTalk #RealSolutions virtual program on race, gender, and violence. In 1996, he started America & MOORE, LLC to provide comprehensive diversity, privilege, and leadership training/workshops. Dr. Moore is recognized as one of the nation's top speakers and educators. Dr. Moore is the Founder/Program Director for the White Privilege Conference (WPC). In 2014, Dr. Moore founded The Privilege Institute (TPI), which engages people in research, education, action, and leadership through workshops, conferences, publications, strategic partnerships, and relationships. Dr. Marguerite W. Penick-Parks received her PhD from the University of Iowa in Curriculum and Instruction. She was a high school teacher in an urban school in Kansas City, Kansas. She currently serves as Chair of Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Her work centers on issues of power, privilege, and oppression in relationship to issues of curriculum, with a special emphasis on the incorporation of quality literature in K-12 classrooms. Penick-Parks appears in the movie "Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible" by the World Trust Organization. How to register The training is limited to 95 participants, so please sign up early to reserve your spot in this event. Duplicate registrations will be deleted to afford this opportunity to as many participants as possible. The City's Office of Equity & Human Rights is offering an online training for area businesses and organizations. There is no charge to participate in this virtual event.
