SEATTLE, WA — Residents in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood have been given the all-clear to return to their homes after firefighters were called to investigate a natural gas leak on Saturday.
The leak was identified in the area of Republican Street and Westview Avenue North, according to a tweet sent by the department.
It's possible the leak was caused by a construction excavator, local ABC-affiliate KOMO reported.
Areas from Mercer Street south to Thomas Street and Ninth Avenue East to Fairview Avenue North were evacuated, KOMO reported.
The leak has been secured by Puget Sound Energy, authorities said on Twitter. Air quality tested within safe levels, and while [eople in the immediate area may still smell natural gas, there is no risk of ignition, authorities said.
