SILVER SPRING, MD — A 63-year-old Silver Spring woman was killed after being struck by a car Wednesday night, police said Thursday, but the area where she was hit carries significance to the woman's family, according to multiple reports. Claire Weissmeyer Grossman was pronounced dead at the scene of the car after being hit just after 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Montgomery County Police reported. The accident occurred on Georgia Avenue near Rippling Brook Drive and involved a 2015 Toyota Camry, which was traveling north on Georgia Avenue, police said. Police said that Weissmeyer was attempted to cross the street when she was hit. The driver of the vehicle, a 19-year-old Rockville resident, was not injured. The accident happened just two blocks from where Grossman's husband, Robert, was killed after being hit by a car in 2016, according to reports. A neighbor told WTOP News that Robert Grossman was killed while crossing Georgia Avenue near Regina Drive, which is about 1,000 feet from where Wednesday's accident occurred. Claire Grossman was coming home from work at CVS where she was employed as a clerk when she was hit, her daughter told WUSA9. She said her mother had just gotten off a bus and was attempting to cross Georgia Avenue when she was hit. The station reported that the Maryland Department of Transportation installed traffic and pedestrian signals at the intersection where Claire Grossman was killed to attempt to slow down traffic. Residents said that the area has seen a significant increase in traffic accidents in recent years. "When it comes to the way they were killed," Joelle Grossman Black, Grossman's sister-in-law told WUSA9. "That's the part that that really crushes my heart. That's the part that really puts me to tears." The Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit are continuing to investigate the accident.
