Happy Mother's Day. Mother's Day is Sunday, May 9, 2021. How did the tradition of honoring Mothers in America begin? Mother's Day had its roots prior to the Civil War during the 19th Century. Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia began a "Mother's Work Club" "...to teach local women how to properly care for their children," according to the article "Mother's Day 2021" from History.com. After the Civil War ended these clubs continued as a way of uniting a section of the country that was still divided from the Civil War. In 1868 Jarvis began a "Mothers' Friendship Day" for all Mothers and soldiers from the Union and Confederate Armies "...to promote reconciliation," according to the article. It was Jarvis' daughter Anna Jarvis who brought the idea of Mother's Day to fruition after the death of her mother in 1905. She conceived it "...as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children," according to History.com. Jarvis did this through the monetary support of Philadelphia department store owner John Wanamaker and in May 1908 the first Mother's Day celebration was held at a Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia due to the efforts of Anna Jarvis. On that day a Mother's Day event was springing up at Wanamaker's department stores in Philadelphia where thousands of people attended the event. Due to the success of this Mother's Day event Jarvis began a letter writing campaign to newspapers and politicians to advance her cause of honoring mothers on a specific day. More success fell on Jarvis' mission for a day honoring mothers. "By 1912 many states, towns and churches had adopted Mother's Day as an annual holiday, and Jarvis had established the Mother's Day International Association to help promote her cause," according to "Mother's Day 2021" from History.com. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson made it official he set aside the second Sunday in May as a day to honor mothers.
