TUCSON, AZ — A man was charged in connection with a fatal shooting in downtown Tucson Thursday, police said. Andre Michael Lee was killed in the shooting, which occurred near 55 N. Fifth Ave. just before midnight Thursday, police said. Joseph Paul Cavanaugh, 32, was charged Friday in connection with the shooting, which occurred in the Martin Luther King Building, according to police. Cavanaugh was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree burglary, with additional charges possible at the end of the investigation, police said. Cavanaugh is currently being held at Pima County Detention Center. No bail had been set as of Friday. If convicted, Cavanaugh faces a maximum penalty of either life in prison, with or without parole, or the death penalty on the first-degree murder charge. In addition, Cavanaugh faces between seven and 21 years in prison if convicted on the first-degree burglary charge. Detectives believe that Cavanaugh and Lee were in an argument in the hallway of the apartment building when the shooting occurred, police said.
