YONKERS, NY — A 6-year-old child playing on the front porch of his home was struck by a stray bullet, according to Yonkers police.
The shooting happened just after 6 p.m. Thursday near the corner of Ash Street and Oak Street. Authorities say the child was struck in the shoulder and is being treated at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. The boy's injuries were described by officials as not "life-threatening."
Police say three teenagers are in custody as part of the investigation into the shooting.
"We do have three in custody, " Yonkers Police Commissioner John Mueller said in a public statement at the crime scene. "We do have two firearms recovered and we know, and this is the most important part, that our 6-year-old victim is going to be OK."
Police say the child was not the intended victim of the shooting, but that the shooters were firing at each other. Several shots were fired during the gunfire exchange yesterday evening. All three suspects in custody are under the age of 18, according to NBC News.
"As a parent it's despicable," Mueller added. "It's disgusting. It's horrible. You know, this is what we're up against right now."
