HARLEM, NY — Police shared new details on Thursday, including the victim's name, in the case of a dead man found stuffed inside a bag in a Harlem apartment last week.
Daniel McCray, a 37-year-old who lived in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, was identified as the man whose remains were found stuffed inside a garbage bag last Friday in a sixth-floor apartment at 770 St. Nicholas Ave., police said.
The apartment's resident, a 75-year-old man, allowed drug users to enter his apartment on a regular basis to do drugs with him, a police source said Thursday. The users were free to come and go as they pleased.
About two weeks prior to the grisly discovery, the man said he began to smell a foul odor and asked a home health attendant to come and clean the apartment, the source said. (Neighbors had also complained for days about a bad smell emanating from the apartment, the Daily News reported).
The aide came and noticed a comforter, which they lifted. Underneath was the garbage bag containing the victim's body, according to police.
The 75-year-old man said he did not know the victim or how he ended up in his apartment.
McCray's death has been ruled a homicide, but no cause of death has been announced. Police did not say whether the 75-year-old man is considered a suspect.
