AUSTIN, TX — After a week of searching for a missing swimmer, Travis County Sheriff's Office recovered a body from Lake Travis on Sunday, officials said. Jermont Powers, 31, of Houston, was identified as the person found in the Devil's Cove area of the lake. Powers was found Sunday morning after Texas Parks & Wildlife's sonar revealed a viable location for the sheriff's office's dive team to search and recover his body. Powers was reported as a missing swimmer on April 17 after he was last seen near a boat that was anchored in Devil's Cove. Water in that area of the lake is about 35 feet deep with low visibility due to silt, officials said. Travis County Sheriff's Office, Jonestown police, Travis County Parks Police, Starflight, North Lake Travis Fire/Rescue, Lake Travis Fire/Rescue and ATCEMS immediately responded to begin rescue efforts. Throughout the week, the sheriff's office employed several search methods including sonar, drone, shoreline and surface searches. The office was assisted by the Lower Colorado River Authoritiy, Jonestown Police and Texas Parks and Wildlife, who brought a dog to aid the search efforts After six days of searching, the response was shifted to a recovery mission on Friday. The office's dive team actively searched for four days, then went on stand-by, ready to dive when sonar searches indicated a viable location.
