SARATOGA COUNTY, NY — A Lakewood man was found dead in his truck Wednesday after it crashed following a police chase in Saratoga County, New York, authorities said. Robert A. Sanders, 48, was identified Thursday as the driver of a 2008 Toyota Tundra with a large brown tool box in the back that led authorities on a chase through several towns in the county, the Saratoga County sheriff's office said. A suspicious vehicle was reported at the Saratoga Battlefield in Stillwater, NY, about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, but when U.S. Park Service rangers approached, Sanders took off, the sheriff's office said. The Toyota struck barriers at the park entrance before taking off, and the rangers lost sight of it. Stillwater police saw the truck and followed but Sanders continued to flee, driving through Stillwater and Mechanicville before hitting signs at a traffic roundabout of U.S. Route 9 and New York State Route 67, the sheriff's office said. Sanders kept going south on U.S. 9 before crossing the center line and crashing into a guardrail on the east side of the road in Malta, where the truck came to a stop, authorities said. Sanders was found dead inside the truck, the sheriff's office said. The Saratoga County sheriff's office is asking anyone with information on why he was in the area or who had contact with Sanders in the hours before the chase to call them at 518-885-6761 or contact them by email at [email protected].
