WORCESTER, MA — Worcester this week will reopen several major facilities for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began in 2020, a likely sign that officials see the coronavirus fading this spring. Beginning Monday, the main library downtown will reopen for browsing and other services, like using computers and copying and printing. The Francis Perkins Branch along West Boylston Street will do the same. Residents won't need appointments to visit the libraries, but will be limited to half-hour blocks during library hours. Worcester will also begin reopening basketball and volleyball courts on Monday. Close-contact sports have been off-limits at city facilities since spring 2020. It will take about a week to reopen the sports facilities, according to officials. On Friday, Worcester reported the city added 203 new cases over the past week. That's less than the previous week, when Worcester added over 300 cases. COVID-19 patients at UMass Memorial and St. Vincent hospitals dropped by 15 to 49.
