Description

A tour of CitySprouts community Hurley Street Farm. Guests take home a seed ball and plant it where they would like! (Cancelled if pouring!) The CitySprouts’ Youth Leadership Team is excited to showcase their work at Cambridge’s Hurley Street Farm! Join them on May 5th at 4pm for an in person tour and learn about how youth have worked together to become stewards of this special place. Create a recycled paper seed ball to take home to plant. Register soon-space is limited. Unlike the typical community garden consisting of various privately-run plots, the Hurley Street neighborhood farm is collectively staffed by local volunteers of all backgrounds. Employing Permaculture design principles, the farm’s socio-environmental goals focus on being “regenerative:” producing maximal nutrient-dense food, improving soil and ecosystem health for future growing, and serving as a gathering place for the community to celebrate food. The produce grown will benefit the landowners, volunteers, and Cambridge-centered food security organizations. About CitySprouts The CitySprouts mission is to cultivate wonder for all children with hands-on learning through urban gardens. For 20 years, CitySprouts has helped Cambridge children engage with the natural world in which we all live. CitySprouts Garden Educators partner with Cambridge classroom teachers to deepen elementary students’ science knowledge by exploring the school garden. In addition it runs a summer and after school program for middle school youth to teach them growing skills and help them become environmental stewards of their community. Thousands of Cambridge school children have grown up learning science from the garden. More than 650 middle schoolers have gone through City Sprouts summer program or after school leadership club.
