Description

Press release from CGA: April 29, 2021 State Representative Terrie Wood (R-Darien, Norwalk) proudly co-sponsored and voted in favor of two bills promoting long-term environmental sustainability in Connecticut: H.J.R. 53, Resolution Proposing the Adoption of the Long Island Sound Blue Plan (passed unanimously: 142-0) H.B. 6503 (as amended by House Amendment A), An Act Concerning the Siting of Anaerobic Digestion Facilities on Farms (passed unanimously: 141-0) "Supporting clean energy and conservation are, in my opinion, nonpartisan issues. Making sure Connecticut municipalities have access to reliable and reusable power sources and limit their use of natural resources, where possible, must be front-and-center," said Rep. Wood, who also serves as House Republican Policy Chair. "As we continue to develop and grow our state economy, we must find a way to do this by relying on science and innovation to balance market demand with the natural resources we have so future generations may inherit the rich environment we enjoy today." The Long Island Sound Blue Plan is a science-based approach to balancing conservation with economic development in the marine spatial planning process, which is especially important to the coastal communities of Norwalk and Darien. The plan takes inventory of the sound's natural resources and accounts for the impact of human activity on marine habitats. While other state programs regulate the sound's resources, this plan actually tallies those resources in an aggregate fashion and addresses conflicts pertaining to the usage of such resources. H.B. 6503 expedites the process for permitting anaerobic digesters on farms. Anaerobic digesters are oxygen-free tanks that use organics such as food and animal waste to make energy and agricultural products. This process has become a source of jobs and economic growth in Connecticut's rural communities, and this legislation helps promote this industry. This press release was produced by CGA.
