Description

Several years back I went to an event about women activists in Africa trying to rid the problem of FGM. (Female genital mutilation). It was a very inspiring event since they were having some big succ After the event I ran into a young woman who was from Kenya. As we talked, I found out she'd finally gotten lucky after several tries, and been able to come to the U.S. to study. She was bright, full of happiness, grateful to be here in the U.S. and going to the local J.C. She had a full load of classes, and also worked three jobs to make as much money as possible. I wouldn't doubt that despite three jobs, she made sure she got straight A's. She was the lucky one. She had six sisters, and their father had always wanted a good education for them all. Unfortunately, her father had died, and a good education was not going to be possible for all of them. Who knows how she was the one lucky enough to get chosen to be able to come here to the U.S. Maybe she was the one at the right age, would benefit the most, and was considered the brightest one. Whatever the luck, and blessing, she certainly didn't take it for granted, and she certainly didn't carry any chip on her shoulder about losing her father, her family not having enough money for an education for all of them, or about anything. And believe me, this girl was beautiful. Her strong beauty was one of happiness, and gratefulness. She was a bright star, and one of the happiest persons I have ever met. I don't know if she is still here in the states now. I don't know what she would think about what is currently going on. But, what I do know, is if this country was so full of this horrible 'systemic racism' Boogeyman we are supposed to keep apologizing for, she, and the countless thousands of other 'black', and 'brown' people who chose to come here, and love being here, just wouldn't be here.
