JOLIET, IL — For the third time in the past two years, Joliet police officer Bill Busse has been arrested, this time by Chicago police, according to Joliet's news radio station, WJOL. WJOL broke the news Thursday morning, reporting that it confirmed through Joliet Police Sgt. Dwayne English the news of Busse's latest arrest. Joliet Patch had called English about the Busse matter on Wednesday, but the Joliet Police Department spokesman did not return calls to Patch. In any event, the 37-year-old Busse remains on the city of Joliet's payroll, even though then-chief Al Roechner recommended him for termination in February 2020. At no point between Feb. 28, 2020, and January 2021, when Roechner left the department, did the chief appear before the city's police and fire board to present his case as to why Busse's firing was warranted. As a result, Busse appealed his firing, and Busse remains on the city's payroll as he continues to get paid to stay home. On two separate occasions in 2019, once in May and another time that December, Busse was arrested by New Lenox on domestic battery charges. He was accused of attacking his ex-wife. Both of those criminal cases have yet to go to trial at the new Will County Courthouse. On May 18, 2019, Busse's ex-wife stated in court papers that the off-duty Joliet Police officer "kept hitting me open-handed. He spit at me multiple times saying he should kill me for f*** lying ... He put my head in the washer and was talking like he was going to slam my head." "He hit me in the back of the head many times and the sides of my face, put his hand on my throat and was pulling my hair, I was begging him to stop," she told the court. Busse also "threatened to kill me if I call the police or went to the police. This went on for a long time and Bill finally calmed down," her order of protection petition states. A Homer Glen resident, Busse joined the Joliet Police Department in June 2013 and, before that, served on the Park Forest Police Department, where he was on the SWAT team. Joliet Patch will update this article as more information becomes known about the details of Busse's arrest Wednesday in Chicago.
