LAKEWOOD, OH — After much controversy and debate, the basketball hoops at Madison Park will be reinstalled. The hoops were temporarily removed after a shooting at Madison Park on April 13. It was the second shooting at the park in two months. On the evening of April 13, an 18-year-old was shot at Madison Park. The teenager was taken to MetroHealth Hospital for treatment. Following the shooting, city officials implemented new safety policies at the park. Lakewood police recommended the hoops be temporarily removed until the investigation was complete, city officials said in a statement issued Thursday. "Two men have been arrested and charged in connection to the April 13th Madison Park shooting. As a continued safety precaution, the City's increased police presence around Madison Park will continue along with an enhancement to the community mentorship program at the basketball courts," the city said. When the hoops were removed, an impromptu community movement sprung up, demanding the hoops be returned. Community meetings and basketball-themed protests were held repeatedly at the courts, prompting conversation about why the hoops were removed. Crews will reinstall the hoops Thursday.
