Offered by Sacandaga Mohawk Coast Guard Auxiliary/ Suddenly in command a scary thought. You are on the water and your captain is incapacitated and you are suddenly in command of the vessel. And you have no boating experience. How do you get the boat under control? Can you perform basic first aid and get the boat back to the dock? If you are not sure you could handle this situation and would like to gain confidence on the water, the “Suddenly in Command” class offered by the Sacandaga Mohawk Coast Guard Auxiliary is for you.Designed for the first mate and boating partner with limited boating skills and experience, this class emphasizes those skills needed to safely bring the vessel home or get help in the event the skipper becomes disabled.  The course identifies the emergency equipment necessary to avert danger on the water or to obtain help.  The proper use of the equipment, accessibility and methods of storage are discussed.  Techniques for the proper use of the VHF-FM radio for the various stages of distress and what you need to know before you call for help are discussed.  Discussion items include things you should know about your vessel in order to get it back to port in the event the skipper is disabled.  Scenarios where the first mate has to take command are discussed in depth providing the participants with what they might be faced with and how they might cope in those emergency situations.
