Beach Cleanup by Ballast @ Ocean Beach at stairwell 17 (across the street from Beach Chalet) in San Francisco on May 22, 11AM to 1PM. Make a difference while enjoying a day at the beach. Ocean Beach is a beautiful three-mile stretch of coastline popular with local residents and visitors alike for a range of recreational activities. Unfortunately, with its popularity, there is a lot of human-made debris left behind which is harmful to wildlife and our community. Help us lead by example, steward our coastline, and keep our beaches beautiful, clean, and safe for all of us to enjoy. Did you know that 80% of marine debris come from land-based sources? That means from us, our daily activities, and our waste. We'd like to invite you to join us at Ocean Beach at stairwell 17 (across the street from Beach Chalet) in San Francisco on May 22, 11AM to 1PM. Snacks and water will be provided but feel free to bring your own snacks. We will also have hand sanitizer available. AGE, SKILLS, WHAT TO BRING: - A bucket or reusable bag, if you can. - Gloves (like gardening gloves or leather work gloves), if you can. Latex gloves and trash bags will be provided if you don't have any. - Volunteers of all ages are welcome. Minors must be accompanied by adults. - Wear clothes that can get dirty. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. - Bring layers for changing weather and rain gear if necessary. - Bring a personal water bottle and sunscreen! - No experience necessary. Instructions and tools will be provided. COVID-19 SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS : - Cover your mouth and nose with a mask or face covering when around others. - Volunteers should wear protective gloves during a cleanup and avoid touching their face, whether COVID-19 is a threat in the community or not. Work or gardening gloves that can be washed and reused are a great option, but at the very least, volunteers should wear rubber gloves to protect against germs and sharp or abrasive trash items. - Maintain distance between yourself and other people outside of your home. Stay at least 6 feet or 2 meters (about 2 arms’ length) from other people. - Rain cancels cleanups! We will reschedule if necessary.
