Falmouth Enacting Water Ban Amid Drought Concerns

FALMOUTH, MA — The Falmouth Select Board has enacted a water ban that will go into effect Saturday amid concerns over a drought affecting much of the state. The ban allows residents to water their lawns, but only on alternating days. Odd numbered houses can water their lawns on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, while even numbered houses can on Wednesday, Fridays and Sundays. No one is allowed to water their lawn on Mondays. "With the water shortage and drought that we've been having, we haven't been getting a lot of rain recharge," said Peter McConarty, the town's director of public works. "We're trying to work with the public and the landscapers and the contractors to keep this going. Water Superintendent Cathal O'Brien said newly installed lawns and new plants are exempt from the ban. Other rules in the ban include: Sidewalks, patios, and driveways can only be watered by businesses for safety/health reasonsPistol grip nozzles with auto shut off are required for all hoses used for washing cars and all hoses at dockside facilitiesTown officials said repeat violations may result in water shut-offs. O'Brien said he also considered allowing watering every day, but only at certain times, but he chose the alternating policy because it's easier to enforce. "If we get complaints and issues, it's as simple as today is not your day," O'Brien said. "You know your house number. You know the day of the week. That's as simple as it is."
