SAN MATEO, CA — San Mateo police will be conducting an enforcement operation at busy crosswalks and intersections on Thursday and issuing citations to pedestrians and drivers who violate traffic laws. In a news release, the police department cited "a number of fatal traffic collisions involving pedestrians" in the city of San Mateo, and said it aimed to "encourage members of our community to develop and maintain safe practices while driving, walking and cycling throughout San Mateo." Police will be enforcing the operation from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. "In addition to our Safe Streets San Mateo Traffic Safety Campaign, this pedestrian safety operation is another tool our department can utilize to improve traffic safety and educate motorists and pedestrians alike," said San Mateo Police Traffic Sergeant Craig Collom. "When approaching a crosswalk where pedestrians are present, drivers must yield the right-of-way. Our hope is this operation will serve as a reminder to both drivers and pedestrians about their individual responsibilities and deter future violations."
