Fully Vaccinated RIers Can Go Maskless Outdoors Starting Friday

PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island's new rules for outdoor mask-wearing are coming about a week earlier than planned, thanks to new guidance from the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention. Starting Friday, fully vaccinated people will no longer be required to wear masks outdoors, except for in crowded spaces where social distancing is difficult. The new policy applies only to people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, meaning it's been at least two weeks since they received the final dose of their vaccine. Gov. Dan McKee said he hoped that the new CDC guidance will encourage more Rhode Islanders to get vaccinated. "Vaccinated people have more flexibility when it comes to when and where they are recommended to wear masks," McKee continued. "There are vaccination appointments available today. Don't miss your shot." Everyone — including fully vaccinated people — will still be required to wear a mask in all indoor, public settings, as well as crowded outdoor settings such as large groups or venues. The Rhode Island Department of Health encouraged all residents to continue to avoid crowds when possible, and keep their distance from those who are not in their household. The new policy goes into effect a week before the start of new, looser coronavirus regulations in the state, which will include increased capacity in businesses and venues of assembly, higher limits on social gatherings and more.
