PHILADELPHIA — TSA at the Philadelphia International Airport caught a man with a loaded handgun that turned out to be stolen in his carry-on bag, according to the federal agency. The incident occurred Tuesday at the airport. According to TSA, the local man had a .40 caliber handgun loaded with eight rounds in his carry-on bag. TSA officers were able to find the gun at one of the airport's security checkpoints, the agency said. Philadelphia Police were notified and later arrested the man and sized the gun, which was stolen, according to TSA. TSA said the man also faces a federal financial civil penalty for carrying a loaded gun to an airport checkpoint. Passengers are allowed to travel with firearms in checked baggage if they are properly packaged and declared at their airline ticket counter. Firearms must be unloaded, packed in a hard-sided case, locked, and packed separately from ammunition. TSA has details on how to properly travel with a firearm posted online here. Travelers should also contact their airline as they may have additional requirements for traveling with firearms and ammunition. When an individual shows up at a checkpoint with a firearm, the checkpoint lane comes to a standstill until the police resolve the incident, which can delay travelers from getting to their gates, TSA said.
