Looking for small companion dog for husband

We are looking for a small/medium companion dog for my husband. A lower shedding dog would be nice. It’s been a tough year with him losing his job and health issues. We are looking for a dog that will go for walks, play, and loves to snuggle. Must be good with kids and a cat. We don’t care about male/female, personality is the most important. I am not looking to spend an arm and a leg, but a reasonable fee is understandable. We are also willing to drive. Please help us find the perfect family member. (And please don’t tell me to go look at shelters, I have been for awhile)
