The West Palm Beach GreenMarket has been named the number one farmers market in the U.S. by voters of USA Today 10Best. A panel of food and travel experts with the campaign determined their top 20 farmers markets and asked the public to vote on which should be crowned the number one market in the country. State of Florida Awards City of West Palm Beach $16.7 Million for More Resilient Infrastructure The City of West Palm Beach has been awarded $16,764,610 by the State of Florida through the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity's (DEO) Rebuild Florida Mitigation General Infrastructure Program. The program, administered by DEO, allows local governments to develop large-scale infrastructure projects to make communities more resilient to future disasters. This very sizeable award to the City of West Palm Beach is to be used to build resilient seawalls, improve storm water quality, and develop living shorelines, pedestrian hardscaping and native landscaping. The City of West Palm Beach is one of only 15 municipalities in the State of Florida to receive part of a nearly $150 million tranche. West Palm Beach Fire Department: Rechargeable Batteries Can Be a Fire Hazard The West Palm Beach Fire Department urges residents to use caution when disposing of certain types of batteries. City of West Palm Beach Recent Policy Actions Below is a summary of some of the approvals and decisions made by the City Commission at a meeting on Monday, April 19, 2021. Approved a license agreement between the City of West Palm Beach and Florida Power and Light Company ("FPL") and authorizes the appropriation of $40,000 from the Public Art Account to issue a Call to Artists, commission an artist, and for an art installation on FPL property located at 810 Charlotte Avenue. The identified site serves as a visually prominent entry way to the City's downtown corridor. The theme of the project is "Florida Fauna". The colorful foliage of South Florida will inspire the design. The final design will be presented to City Commission for approval at a later date. Approved a first amendment to the landscape maintenance memorandum of agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for maintenance and a right of way maintenance agreement with SHP VI Datura West Palm Owner, LLC for of a portion of State Road 5/Quadrille Boulevard from Datura Street to mile post 0.502. As part of the development of Watermark Senior Living, located at 445 Datura Street, the applicant is proposing to install landscape material, including sod and oak trees, as well as irrigation within the Quadrille Boulevard right-of-way. As part of this proposal, an amendment to the landscape maintenance memorandum agreement with the FDOT is required to transfer the maintenance of the landscape and hardscape improvements from FDOT to the City. Maintenance obligations will transfer from the City to the developer. City to Observe Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May The City of West Palm Beach will observe Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May. The month celebrates the contributions, sacrifices and accomplishments that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made to our nation. At the May 3, 2021 City Commission meeting, Mayor Keith A. James will issue a special proclamation declaring the month of May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and the City will host a series of events in celebration in May. Community Redevelopment Agency Board Approves Anchor Site Project On Monday, April 12, 2021, the CRA board unanimously approved the concept plan for the anchor site project in the Northwood/Pleasant City district. The mixed-use project will incorporate 350 residential units, 58,000 square feet of commercial retail and office space, a parking garage with approximately 450 parking spaces and at least 10,000 sq. ft. of public plaza and open space. James joins other Climate Mayors highlighting climate policies and projects as part of Earth Week, April 19-23, 2021. As part of Earth Week, President Joe Biden committed to reduce climate-threatening Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 50-52% by 2030. This is in alignment with the recently released Climate Mayors Synthesis Report and is supported by America is All In. This follows action taken by Mayor James and 465 other mayors in the Climate Mayors network, who committed to adopting, honoring, and upholding the commitments to the goals enshrined in the Paris Agreement. Temporary Closure of Hog Hammock Trail at Grassy Waters Preserve for Boardwalk Improvements Through June 30, 2021, the Hog Hammock Trail, located at 8537 Northlake Blvd on the North Side of Grassy Waters Preserve, will remain temporarily closed for boardwalk repairs. All sections of the trail on the west side and the Promontory Trail will remain open. The Cypress boardwalk Trail, Eagle Trail, Apoxee and Owahee Trails remain open.
