LONG BEACH, NY — It was riveting time on the ice for the Long Beach varsity hockey squad. They overcame a 2-0 deficit against Bellmore-Merrick to win the Nassau County championship.
After Jack Dodd got Long Beach on the board, Shane Murphy lit the lamp twice, putting them ahead, including the game-winner in the final 20 seconds.
The puck was passed from Brian Brand to Jack Gannon before it made its way to Murphy's stick and a spot in the net.
Goalie Kieran Byrne came up with a big save just before the winning goal, according to Long Beach's Facebook post.
The tournament was held Friday at Northwell Ice Rink in Eisenhower Park.
There was more sports excitement in Long Beach: the boys' volleyball team scored a five-game nail-biter, eliminating Port Washington Sunday as they advance to the Nassau County finals.
