Tractor-Trailer Hits Police Car On Route 50, Flees Scene: Report

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Officers said a tractor-trailer hit a marked police car parked in the shoulder of westbound U.S. Route 50 in Annapolis. An incident report noted that the accident happened around 1 a.m. Monday just before Maryland Route 2, also known as Ritchie Highway. The Maryland State Police added that the trooper was clearing a traffic stop during the collision. The write-up explained that the officer was standing on the passenger side of the stopped vehicles, so he was not hurt in the wreck. The press release mentioned that the crash was a hit-and-run. The white Volvo truck sustained damage to its passenger side, and it's missing a step rail, the report informed. Troopers reminded Marylanders to follow the state's move-over law. This requires cars to move at least on-lane over from stopped emergency vehicles. If it is not safe to do so, motorists should reduce their speed to safely pass the scene. Violating this law could result in a misdemeanor, a $110 fine and one point added to a driver's license. The penalty jumps to a $150 fine and a three-point citation if the infraction causes an accident. If a serious injury or death ensues, motorists are on the hook for $750 and three points.
