SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of a seven-month-old boy he was looking after and who died after suffering blunt force trauma to the head last week, the San Francisco District Attorney announced Monday. Joseph Williams was charged with murder in connection to the infant's death and whom District Attorney Chesa Boudin identified as "Baby S." Boudin said that Williams is not related to the young boy, who died on April 20. The boy was pronounced dead at the California Pacific Medical Center after officers were called to the hospital for a report of an unresponsive infant. Medical professionals told authorities that there were signs of trauma. Williams, who brought the infant to the hospital, was charged with murder, assault on a child causing death and obstructing a police officer, Boudin announced. "The death of Baby S is a tragedy. We are so deeply sorry for the family, whose enormous grief we can only imagine," Boudin said in a news release. "…We know nothing can make this family whole again, but we will work our hardest to make sure there is justice." The San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office identified the infant as Synciere Williams, City News Service reported. Joseph Williams has previously been arrested for domestic violence involving a woman, Boudin said in the news release. The woman, with whom Williams had an "intimate relationship", according to the district attorney, is not the baby's mother, Boudin said. In both previous instances, the woman chose not to seek criminal charges against Williams, Boudin said. The district attorney said his office did not have enough evidence to charge Williams in the recent incidents. Williams is being held without bond, according to jail records. City News Service contributed to this report.
