SUNNYVALE, CA — The former Toys R Us location in Sunnyvale will have new tenants this fall. REI, the outdoor recreation retailer, is relocating its Mountain View store to Sunnyvale in an effort to offer more items in a larger space. According to a Monday news release, the location at 130 E. El Camino Real is 37,000 square feet, nearly 7,000 feet larger than the current Mountain View spot. The new store will have an expanded professional bike, ski and snowboard shops along with a new community space. The Toys R Us store closed in 2018. It has a storied history dating back to the 1970s and has been by staff and customers described as "haunted." REI has over a dozen locations in Northern California, including stores in San Carlos and Saratoga. "Our store team is incredibly excited about the relocation and eager to get more involved with the Sunnyvale community. The Sunnyvale location will provide more than 1.4 million lifetime REI members in Northern California with the gear and resources to enjoy the outdoors in the South Bay," said Kirk Peterson, REI regional director for Northern California, in a news release. "We are looking forward to welcoming the community into the new space and have the opportunity to connect, inspire, and enable a life outside for even more people." REI is also hiring additional employees for the new store in addition to employees transitioning from the Mountain View location. Click here for more information.
